The Just Add Ears hood sewing pattern with chin strap is perfect for your whole family. It comes in three shapes: Hoodie, Pixie Point, and Elf Curl, with an optional dart for adding ears. The hood pattern is made of two fully-lined layers and is reversible (except for the Elf shape). The free pattern has all 6 sizes in it: Newborn/Doll, Infant, Little Kid, Big Kid, Teen, Adult, so there is not need to get additional sizes later.

Plus the hood pattern is designed to grow with your child. The face edge can be folded back for better vision or a smaller head. The neck band can also be rolled up for a shorter head or desire for snugger fit. One kids hat can be used for years, saving you time.  The larger hoods work the same way.  The neck is designed to fit loosely, but just tight enough to stay on, so there is room to roll it up.

This hood is great on it’s own but also lends it’s self to add-ons. It is “ear ready”, so you can really get creative. To get you started I have the free “Make it A Unicorn” pattern and Dinosaur / Dragon spikes patterns, plus holly and berry templates for the elf hood.  The optional dart is marked to help you get those cute ears in just the right place. Don’t want ears?  Don’t cut the dart!  You can find lots of ear shapes in the Animal Elements patterns

Supplies

Fabric

Layer your fabrics to get the protection you need. Note: Cotton feels cold when wet. I used Blizzard Fleece from Joann Fabric for both outside and lining because I live in Indiana and it is cold, wet, and windy.

Warm & Wet: Raincoat fabric like Rip-Stop Nylon or Laminated Cotton. Lining with mesh like Koolnit to keep the raincoat fabric from clinging.
Cool & Windy: Rip-stop Nylon, Wool, dense Fleece, Soft shell.
Cold & Snow: Fleece, Pre-Quilted Fabric, Minky, Wool, Dense Flannel, Softshell, Dense Knits, Faux Sherpa and Silk.
Chilly & Dry: Flannel, Fleece, Knits like Cotton Lycra, Sweatshirt Fabric, Sweater Knit or Quilters Cotton outside
lined with fleece or flannel.
