Yup, I said SVG files. So you can cut all these spikes out on your Cricut or other cutting machine. The Cricut Maker is great for cutting these, as it’s rotary cutting blade and fabric mat can cut plain fabric that hasn’t been bonded. If you have a different type of machine, you may want to bond your fabric to interfacing before you cut. Good news! The pieces need interfacing so you aren’t wasting time or materials.

Here I added spikes to a Kinderpack Hood for the Kinderpack Dino-Mite carrier.  I added a V detail to each spike to give a cartoon look, it also helps them stand up better, as it holds the layers together.

This Dino Spike set includes 5 different sizes to create your perfect dinosaur or spiky creature. Vary the size for a more natural look or sink them deeper into the seam to give even more size variation. Use them one at a time or use them in pairs next to each other like a Stegosaurus.

There are so many patterns out there that you can add spikes too. This is the “Set Sail Hat” pattern from Patterns For Pirates.

When picking fabric, the sky is the limit and the remnant bin can be a treasure trove: Fleece, minky, fake fur, wrap scrap, swim fabric. Matching or contrasting fabric both look great. You can be as creative with this pattern as you desire: it’s really just a starting point for your imagination. The possibilities are endless!

I used quilters cotton for the yellow spikes with fusible fleece inside.  Because fusible fleece is pretty thick, I decided to first I cut out the interfacing and then fused to to my fabric leaving room for seam allowance. Then I put another layer of fabric behind it and sewed around my interfacing. This saved me cutting out all those small pieces and kept my bulky interfacing out of the seam.  Added bonus, it’s much harder to loose one big piece of fabric. Tiny spikes can easily disappear if you have cats or children, make a few extra.

Then I laid them into the center back seam. They are all the same size, but I did sink the ones in the top a little deeper to help them stand up better.  There is lots of information in the pattern about how to get your spikes to stand up.
