Are you ready to learn how to sew? You are in the right place! There is no one perfect way to learn to sew, you have some options. Let’s to find the right one for you! Choose from In person classes, YouTube Videos, or a Sewing Courses.
In Person Sewing Classes
Look for in person classes in your local area at fabric, craft, hobby, or quilting store. Libraries and maker spaces also often have classes. Call your library, they are generally well connected and might be able to direct you to a local teacher. If you bought your sewing machine locally check with them, they often give you basic classes with your machine. Don’t have a sewing machine yet, or ready to upgrade? Check out the Sewing Machine Buying Guide.
Pro: Some people just do better with a in-person class. Sitting down with an expert is an experience like no other. Even experienced sewists like to take in-person classes to learn a new skill or technique. Going to a class makes you take time to learn. Some classes also have sewing machines available for use and provide materials or have kit available.
Cons: In person classes can be expensive $25 to $100 a class is not uncommon. Less expensive classes will have multiple students dividing the instructors time. You may need to lug your sewing machine and purchased supplies with you. It may seem obvious, but classes are only available on their schedule. So there may not be a class at a convenient time and place for you.
YouTube Videos
I am a fan of how YouTube has evened the playing field of learning. Anyone can record and post videos sharing what they know. Some content creators make videos of them learning a skill. These can be fun to watch, especially the fail videos. But you don’t want to fail, you want to learn. So you need to spend time finding a quality creator and figuring out which videos to watch. This takes time, and in the process you are likely going to get some bad information and waste some time. But it is free (save for add breaks, or paid ad free versions) and it’s always available. Look for learn to sew play-lists. Find a creator that you like listening to and shows the sewing process from a first person point-of-view (POV).
Check out Sewing With Nancy With Nancy Zieman Enjoy full episodes of Sewing With Nancy, the longest-running sewing and quilting program on television. This channel is not for the absolute beginner, but once you get get started it’s great. These videos are dated, but they still contain great information.

Online Sewing Courses
Online sewing courses can be a game changer. They often cost less than one in person class and are available all the time 24/7. So you can work on learning to sew in the middle of the night, if that is when you are free. A course / class is designed with a goal in mind and have lessons and projects that get you to the goal. They can also be updated as information changes. New or better technology or supplies, the teacher can update the class and keep it current.
Paying for a class or service may give you the motivation that you need to use it. Just like paying for a gym membership, you have that “skin in the game” so you use it to not waste the money. Paying for a class or course can work the same way.
Some online courses offer community as well. A Facebook group or private community just for their students. Teachers might have “office hours” or tell you to email them with any questions.
When picking out a class, pay attention to who it’s designed for. If the goal/mission aligns with what you are looking for. See if the course has any preview lessons. These can help you know if you like their style.

Hi, I’m Alice The Fabric Ninja
I’m Alice, the creator of the Fabric Ninja Sewing Patterns & Blog. Lots of people know how to sew, but I also know how to teach. I’m here to support you on your sewing journey. Everyone was once a beginner.
My classes make it easy to learn a new skill by breaking everything into easy to learn bites. Learning a skill makes us feel more competent in life, and it gives us something to show off when we are done.
That is one of the reasons I love quick projects. It’s a quick win. I get some time sewing and allow myself to totally fall into the creative zone, picking fabrics and mixing colors. Then I get to show off what I made.
The skills you learn in this class can be easily transferred into a small business. Make scrunchies, zippered pouches, hand warmers, etc. Great to sell or give as gifts and take some pressure off your Holiday budget.
You will be picking out a pattern for your next project in no time.
I will say that this course is perfect for me. I’ve never used a sewing machine in my life, and so even plugging it in felt daunting. Zero to Sew gets you comfortable with all the pieces of the machine, prior to learning to thread it. Each step gives me the confidence to proceed. Jaclyn B.

What makes this class different?
A lot of people know how to sew, you have probably seen them all over YouTube. What makes me different, is that I also know how to teach. You get clear instructions and clear visuals, that are broken up into bite-size portions perfect for digesting new material.
Do I need to know anything about sewing to start?
You don’t need any previous knowledge about sewing. Zero-to-Sew will take you from Completely Clueless to Absolutely Fearless. I will help you overcome any fear or anxiety that you have about sewing with easy-to-follow directions and simple projects. First, we start by taking that machine out of the box.
It is virtual or in person?
This class is 100% online. The lessons are pre-recorded videos with text and PDF hand-outs where helpful. Zero-to-Sew makes it easy to learn a new skill by breaking everything into easy to learn lessons. An exclusive Facebook group is provided to post assignments, share your victories, and ask questions. I answer all questions personally, as soon as I see them (at times immediately).
Can I see what’s in the course?
Sure thing! You can see a course curriculum preview on the sales page near the top. The welcome unit and supply section is available for full preview. You are able to view the titles of all the other sections as well.
Do I need a printer?
Sewing patterns include measurements (cm and inches), so you don’t have to print them out. You can just use a ruler to draw them. The total number of pages you may wish to print is small, so it should cost you less than $2 to print if you wish to.
How much will supplies cost?
There is a section in the supply unit about how to save money. For example, scissors from the dollar store will cut fabric, as long as they have never cut paper. Also, you might already have some supplies. For example – a hotel sewing kit will have a hand sewing needle.
Do you have a payment plan? Yes! I offer a three payment plan for both the early-bird and regular price.
Is this class good for kids?
In my first batch of students, two 9 years olds were working through the class with their grandmother. The kids were able to do all the sections in the course, but needed some help with shopping, troubleshooting, and safety. It was a great bonding experience for the grandma and her grandkids.
What if I don’t like the course?
