Kids can sew! I know it can be a big leap for adults, but kids really can sew. And your can teach your kid to sew! Today, I’m teaching my 6 year old son to sew a toy blanket for his stuffed dog, French Fry. Yeah, he’s only six, but he can still learn to sew. Although, he’s not ready to be in charge of the foot pedal, but he will learn the basics of sewing and guide the fabric in the sewing machine. What could go wrong?
This project is good for adult/child pairs or individuals. Kids will learn sewing basics and adults will learn ways to help guide the process. You need basic sewing supplies, ¼ yard of fabric is all we used, but you can make this blanket any size, and use optional batting.
Download the Step-by-Step Printable Project Instructions for a Toy Blanket, which also includes instructions for a pillow. The written tutorial is great for young readers who want to do the project “on their own” or for anyone to mark what steps are finished.
If you are nervous about teaching your kid to sew I really suggest that you watch the video first. This video is about how to teach the project, not just how to do it. You’ll see me redirect my young son when he gets distracted, compliment to help with motivation, and where I do small parts for him. You will even see me deep breathing a few times, and laughing a bunch. (You can also find it on YouTube)

This will help you pick the size and kind of needle to use for every project, track when you last changed your needle, and when you last cleaned your machine.Want to remember this? Do you have a fabric stuffed tree video
Hi there,
I do not have a fabric tree video. That’s a great idea though.
