I love getting gifts that relate to my love of sewing. To take the time to connect with my hobby on any level, makes me feel so special. Like that time my brother braved Joann Fabric and got me a 25 yard bolt of muslin for Christmas. I’ll never forget that and neither will he. So what should you get that person who sews? To answer this question, I chatted with my closest sewing friends and we put together a list of our best ideas and favorite sewing things that are perfect as gifts for people who sew.
You can down a one page version of this list, “Top Ten Holiday Gifts For People Who Sew” right here!

I love this little measuring gauge. I have it by my sewing machine to quickly check small things. I do need to put it on a string though, as I misplace it often.
Handmade Gifts
People who love to sew love handmade items. Does it feel intimidating to give a handmade gift? They can make anything, right? Wrong! People who sew know how much love and time is put into handmade items. They will love what you make! Give your friend something you made. Not into making things? Consider a gift from Etsy, that someone else made, it counts! Look for items with images of sewing machines and needles and thread, like this Pedal to the Metal – sewing mug. Amazon has a handmade section too with sewing themed items like “Today I shall create” piece of wall art.
This is the Infinity Tie-Strap tote, and is a great handmaid gift for people who sew. The pattern comes in 4 sizes from Large to Doll size so everyone can have a bag just their size. Although, as you can see my son prefers my medium bag to his sisters small bag. Just so you know, the pattern also have a video tutorial, so even beginners can make it.
Custom Tags
My friends love get gifts with my “Fabric Ninja” tag tucked inside, and I love having my own custom tags. You can get generic tags that say “Made with Love“, but you can also get tags that say “Made by (actual name)”. They come in sew-in and iron-on. I suggest sew-in but iron-on are great for marking kids clothes for camp. There are lots of stock options available like, “Made by Mom”.
Sewing Classes
Notions and Gadgets
People who sew love sewing notions, gadgets and tools. A nicer version of a tool they already have or one they never knew they needed, is an excellent place to start. Not sure if they already have one of “that”? Ask them about sewing, you may just hear the answer. When in doubt, they can always use another. Scissors get dropped and bent, pins get lost, and chalk gets used up. No one who loves to sew will ever say they have too much fabric or too many pairs of scissors. (Ok, I might have too many sewing machines, but it’s more like a collection).
Hold it Still: Pins, Clips & Weights:
- Clover Glass Head Quilting Pins. They are so sharp they never snag the fabric.
- Magnetic Pin Cushions. I have both the Clover and Zirkel versions. The Clover one has a lid, which is great for traveling or handwork in my easy chair. The Zirkel version is much larger and I use them in my class room space.
- Wonderclips are a great pin alternative that I’m starting to actually like. Especially the ones that have a point on the end. They come in many sizes and shapes for every project and a rainbow or of colors! I love this less expensive alternative
- Pattern weights. This is a great opportunity to DIY, as pattern weights can be made with washers and ribbon. Etsy has some amazingly cute ones. These pyramid ones are adorable
. - Sewing machine Foot Pedal Grip. Solve the age old problem of your foot pedal sliding away as you sew. My best friend has one that has Velcro that you attach to the machine foot and then the foot doesn’t go anywhere once you stick it to the pad. It’s magical. No more chasing your foot pedal.
Cut It: Scissors & Seam Rippers
- Scissors – Gingher,Tula Pink, and Kai are amazing quality and feel great in the hand. I’ve had a pair of Ginghers for 19 years and I think it’s about time to sharpen them. Talk about long lasting sharpness. Tula Pink’s greats colors make me smile.
- Pretty embroidery scissors are small, easy to keep in your project bag or next to your machine.
- Spring loaded small scissors: The Fiskars ones with the lock are simply badass. They are called Fiskars 190520-1001 Titanium Micro-Tip Easy Action Scissors
- Fancy Brass Seam Rippers make even the annoying task of seam ripping more enjoyable. Remember the best seam ripper is a sharp one. Learn all about seam rippers here, and find out what that red ball is for.
Lefty Scissors?
I have two lefties in my house. These Gingher scissors are for lefties and these Kai scissors work for right-handed and left-handed people and are the perfect size for smaller hands/projects. My daughter loves them, plus they are pink!
Cutting Machine
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Cricut Maker. You may have head of Cricut Explore or Cameo Silhouette, which can both cut bonded fabric (fabric that has been ironed onto interfacing). The Cricut Maker can cut fabric without being bonded because it has a tiny rotary cutting blade. It’s amazing!
I absolutely love mine. I use it to cut fabric and to cut iron-on vinyl to decorate my creations. You can get the SVG cut file below in my Freebie Library.
Measure It: Tapes & Rulers
- Cute Tape Measures. I used to have a sheep tape measure that the tail pulled out and revealed a tape measure…It always made me smile.
- Metal Ironing Ruler. Dritz Ezy-Hem Over the years, I’ve had 3 of these rulers. After about 10 years of use the writing starts to come off, so I just get another. I always buy these for sewing themed gift baskets.
- Sewing Thread is a constant need. Learn about the best thread to sew with in this post. Gutermann, Sulky, and Mettler are my favorite.
- Fabric – A Fat Quarter bundle is always a good gift idea for people who sew. It’s super usable by crafters and quilters. Pick one in their favorite color, purples, blues, reds, etc.
- Allary Sewing Chalk Pens are so great. I suggest getting the refill you would love them so much.
A Sewing Machine
A sewing machine is a big gift, but you’ll know if it’s the right gift. Maybe your wife or your teen keep talking about sewing. This might be the right time to give the gift of sewing. I have a super detailed post about all the different sewing machine features that includes a workbook with simple pages to help you decide which features are best for you. The workbook also has a page to take with you shopping to keep track of what you have seen. If you would like to give a sewing machine, a beginner friendly entry-level model will cost $100-$300. Want me to pick for you? Get an EverSewn Sparrow 20
The Eversewn Sparrow 20, is what I call a hybrid machine. It has the nice bell as whistles of a computer machine, with the simplicity and price tag of a mechanical machine. Eversewn has several other Sparrow levels if you want a mechanical or fully computerized machine. Image below is a Sparrow 15 I use in class.
