How hard is it?
Most test sewers rate this as an confident beginner pattern as it has a few steps that would be difficult for a complete beginner. Patterns lines are clean and crisp, with clear professional markings and a symbol key. Printable on 8.5″ x 11″ or A4 paper. Patterns have 1/2″ and 1 cm seam allowance options. The written and video tutorials include step-by-step instructions and many photos.
This tote bag sewing pattern has one main body pattern piece and the strap. The strap is broken up into 3 options so you can create your perfect bag. The center body panel is a great place to feature panel prints, large scale fabric, keepsake fabric, legacy wraps, rare fabric, and embroidery. The top can be closed with a tab, zipper, or just left open. The tote has 2 snap markings so you can snap it closed even if it’s full to the brim.
A tote bag is great, but pockets make it better. Instructions are included for adding a patch, slip, or zippered pocket on the inside or outside. Let your creativity go wild! Use different fabrics for each strap section, inside and out, or make it all out of the same fabric. Add trim, pockets, or embroidery. Make the whole thing, or just the pocket out of PUL for a wet bag, or out of mesh for a beach bag that the sand can get out of. Use your imagination!
Supplies:
- Fabric: 2 yards of of fabric is enough to make both sides of the bag. A yard of two different fabrics will give you a different look on each side. See Cutting Diagrams for exact dimensions, if using odd pieces or scrap.
- Interfacing: 1 2/3 yard
- Zippers: Optional for top closure and pockets
- Snaps: Optional for top closure
